Hysterectomy (Total vs Supracervical)

Overview
Removal of the uterus, either with or without the cervix, based on the patient's condition and goals.
Types of Hysterectomy

Total

A total hysterectomy removes both the uterus and the cervix.
  • May involve slightly less surgical dissection in some cases.
  • May be considered when the cervix is healthy and the patient wishes to preserve it.
  • Faster recovery from surgery compared to total hysterectomy as there are no sutures in the vagina that need to heal
  • Stronger attachment point for mesh during pelvic reconstructive surgery

Supracervical

A supracervical hysterectomy removes the upper portion of the uterus while leaving the cervix in place.
  • Eliminates the risk of future cervical disease, including cervical cancer.
  • No need for ongoing cervical cancer screening (Pap tests) if there is no history of significant cervical abnormalities and no other risk factors.
  • Eliminates the possibility of future bleeding from cervical tissue that remains after surgery.
  • Often preferred when treating conditions that involve the cervix or when there is concern for precancerous or cancerous changes.
